What is an Official Translation?

An official translation is a translation of documents, such as birth certificates, statements or passports, produced by a certified translator. To certify your translation, the translator must attest that it is a true, complete, and accurate translation of the original document you presented. Official translations must be stamped, dated, and signed by the accredited translator and/or legal authority. Once certified, the translated document becomes a legalised translation, legally recognised for all official purposes and applications.

The type of certification you may need for your translated documents may depend on the country of your application, the authority that requested it, and its purpose. Let's take a look at the types of certified translations below:

• Certified Translation

A certified translation is a translation of official documents, such as birth or marriage certificates, visa applications, bank statements or academic papers intended for legal or Government use. A standard certified translation is most commonly used for applications in the United Kingdom, United States and Canada, where sworn translators are not mandated.

• Sworn Translation

A sworn translation must be produced by a professional translator who has sworn an official oath before a court. Countries such as Spain, Italy, Poland, France and Germany hold official court registers of all sworn translators and operate a civil law legal framework that officially recognises sworn translations.

• Notarised Translation

A notarised translation is simply a translation accompanied by a notarised signature verifying the translator's identity. This must be done in the presence of a lawyer or accredited notary public.

• Apostilled Translation

To be apostilled, your translation must be legalised by the relevant Government authority. This allows your translation to be accepted in foreign countries that are part of the Hague Convention. The translation will be affixed with an official Apostille.

• Official Translation (Standard Certification)

A certified translation must be accompanied by an official certification confirming that it is a true, accurate, and complete representation of the original document. Typically, this certification is a statement of truth with a signature, stamp, and date from the translator or an accredited translation agency. This standard certification type is widely accepted by authorities and Government bodies in the United Kingdom. • Translation with a Sworn Certification

Sworn certifications are provided by legally appointed (by Court or Government) translators in the country in which you submit your translation. This type of certification involves an official translator or linguist verifying that they have personally carried out the translation and accurately conveyed the meaning of your document.

• Translation with an Apostilled Certification

If you intend to use your documents abroad, you may require a legalised apostilled certification to ensure international recognition of your translation by foreign governments and official institutions. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office often issues this certification to authenticate the translation for use outside the UK.

• Translation with a Notarised Certification

Notarisation involves a notary public or solicitor verifying the authenticity of the translator’s signature. This type of legal translation proves that a registered linguist produced the translation and is recognized for legal purposes.
