Certified and legal translations are often required for international business activities. Your translated document will only be considered verified if it includes a statement of truth with a signature, stamp, and date. We mark in-house certifications with our stamp and the signature of an assigned project manager or translator. Our accredited translators provide:
- Stamped confirmation of translation accuracy
- The date of the translation
- Full name and signature of the translator (or translation company representative)
- The translator's (or translation company's) contact details

What is an Official Translation?
A certified translation is a professional translation of documents, such as birth certificates, statements or passports, produced by an accredited translator. To certify your translation, the translator must attest that it is a true, complete, and accurate translation of the original document you presented. Official translations must be stamped, dated, and signed by the translator and/or legal authority.
A 'certified' translation is defined as a translation that has been stamped and signed by an accredited authority, professional translator or a registered translation agency. The type of official verification you may need for your translated documents depends on where your application takes place, which authority requested it and its purpose.
-
Certified Translation
A certified translation is a translation of documents, such as birth or marriage certificates, visa applications, bank statements or academic papers intended for legal or Government use.
Your translation is certified when accompanied by a signed & stamped statement of truth from an accredited provider, stating that it is a true and accurate representation of the original verified document you provided.
-
Notarised Translation
A notarised translation is simply a translation accompanied by a notarised signature verifying the translator's identity. This must be done in the presence of a lawyer or accredited notary public.
-
Sworn Translation
A translation is considered “sworn” when produced by a professional translator who has sworn an official oath before a court. This type of certification is generally requested for use in the European Union - outside of the UK.
-
Apostilled Translation
A legalised, or Apostilled, translation has been 'legalised' by the Government Ministry. This will allow your translation to be accepted in foreign countries that are part of the Hague Convention. The translation will be affixed with an official Apostille.
Official Translations Guide
This document provides clear guidelines and best practices for certifying translations in the United Kingdom. It is intended for individuals and organisations, professional translators, and companies offering translations.
This guidance is endorsed by the UK’s leading language industry associations, the Association of Translation Companies (ATC), the Institute of Translation and Interpreting (ITI) and the Chartered Institute of Linguists (CIOL).

Certified Translation Types in the United Kingdom
Document translations are often required for legal matters in the United Kingdom, such as applications to the Home Office, Courts, or other official Government applications. Official translations may also be necessary for educational, employment, or other formal applications. If you need documents translated for legal purposes, the translation must be certified by a professional translator or accredited agency, and accompanied by a legalised version of the original document, translated into English.
To certify your translation, the translator must legally attest that the translation is a true, complete and accurate translation of the original document. There are 4 main types of certified translation, these are:
-
Certified Translations
A certified translation is a translation accompanied by an official certification from your chosen provider. Generally, this certification is in the form of a statement of truth, with a signature, stamp and date from the translator or a representative of an accredited translation agency.
Official translations are required by UK authorities & organisations abroad. Our translations (see example) are completed on our letterhead and are signed, stamped and dated, making them legally recognised by authorities.
-
Sworn Translations
Sworn translations are provided by legally appointed (by Court or Government) translators in the country to which you submit your application. This type of certification involves an official translator or linguist verifying that they have personally carried out the translation and accurately conveyed the meaning of your document.
-
Apostilled Translations
If you intend to use your documents abroad, your documents may require an official apostille. For example, this certification may need an apostille from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office to be officially validated.
-
Notarised Translations
Notarised translations require a notary public or a solicitor to verify the authenticity of the translator's signature and that the translation was produced by a registered linguist. You can learn more about the differences between certified and notarised translations here.
More for Professional Translators
As a professional translator, you may be asked to provide a certified translation. Unlike other European countries, such as France, Poland, or Spain, the UK does not have a 'sworn' system that requires translators to be registered with the government.
Translations needed for official purposes in the UK can be, however, authorised directly by a practising translator registered with official translation bodies, such as CIOL or ITI.
The UK Government states that official translations must be done by a translator registered by a professional body. If you'd like to learn more about certifying documents, you can see the government's specific guidelines here.
